Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition was hampered by tight deadlines and lack of staff

Released on June 23 this year, Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition turned out to be one of the most disappointing releases in Night Dive studio history. In addition to bringing in several bugs that weren’t present in the original version, the game also introduced high-level techniques that took much of the visual character out of the adventure.

In an interview given to the PCGamesN website, the developer admitted that the problematic state of the game is his fault and it was the result of a series of wrong decisions. The team responsible for the project not only did not have enough staff to test the title, but there was internal pressure for the remaster to reach the stores in time to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the film directed by Ridley Scott.

Business development director Larry Kuperman explained that the lack of developers was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected part of his team. Another aspect that hampered the project was the fact that it was being finalized at the same time as Dimitris Giannakis, its main producer, was absent as it moves from one corner of the United States to another.

Someone needed to stop the project.

Representatives from Night Dive Studios stated that these situations created a “Perfect storm” what resulted in launch considered disappointing. Giannakis said that if he were present, would have been able to “stop” the project and delay its release until it reaches a more acceptable state.

Another problem that the development team faced was the lack of access to source codes referring to the original version of Blade Runner. Additionally, the complexity of the game, which dynamically changes the real nature of many characters, made it especially difficult to test for bugs.

The company reiterated that Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition does not reach the expected quality of its products and that will continue to work on it. The prognosis is that a new patch with fixes to be released in the coming weeks and that, in the future, players will be able to use a single button to transition between the remastered version and the original version of the adventure.
