In an interview published by Bloomberg on Wednesday (24), the head of the Xbox division, phil spencerstated that he believed that games exclusive to a specific platform will become more and more rare in the future. According to him, solutions such as crossplay will be increasingly beneficial for consumers and for developers who bet on them.
For Spencer, the natural tendency of the industry is take a more inclusive stance, making consumers feel unconstrained by their platforms of choice. “Maybe in your house you buy an Xbox and I buy a PlayStation and our children want to play together and they can’t because we bought the wrong plastic to plug in our televisions.”, the executive explainedreferring to current market conditions.
In this sense, the head of Xbox maintains that fewer exclusives may end up being good for the market in the long run. He says that while the criticism may exist in a more immediate interval, he believes the industry will realize in a matter of time that can continue to grow despite this.
During the interview, Spencer was also asked about her Prospects of completing the purchase of Activision Blizzard. Among the elements of the acquisition that raised questions was a possible exclusivity of the Call of Duty series, which Microsoft has already confirmed that it will not happenat least in the near future.
The executive stated that he is happy with the company’s progress, but that you don’t know how sure you can be about the completion of the procedures. “I’ve never done a $70 billion deal, so I don’t know what my confidence means… but I will say the discussions we’ve had seem positive.“, he stated.
